40k2ndAC VII Month 5 Wave 2

Here we are with Wave 2 of month 5. The juice is really getting to the low end of the tank now… I even tried to add some fun comments to your images, but the quality of this offering was simply too great for me to take in. I am baffled! We have created a monster, where people paint 2nd edition models as if their life depended on it!

Look at these outrageously well painted tanks! Who does something like that!?

This month – the tanks finally roll in! This one has gone right down to the wire due to other distractions, but I was determined to finish the 3 tanks in one fell swoop, leaving me some room for a few bonus models the next (and final) month. I painted the Hellhound first as a test to figure out the camouflage pattern and weathering / decals I was going to go for, before tackling the other two. The airbrush and Tamiya panel liner used as a wash made quick work of the bulk of the models, leaving most of the time spent on various highlights and gentle weathering. I was tempted to go mad with mud on the tracks since they’re Catachan, but I have very little experience with mud splats, and am aware how easy it is to overdo it.

They were all great fun to paint. I’ve always wanted a classic Hellhound, and the Demolisher with its ridiculous oversized cannon is just a stone cold classic. It literally tips over forwards at the slightest touch or when put on a slight decline, totally mad. Flags for the tanks and classic bulldozer blades with hazard stripes didn’t quite make the cut this time, but should be done for the final army shot next month. Besides that, I need to pick which random Imperial officials are going to go on campaign with the Catachans..! Looking forward to seeing everyones final entries next month!
Who paints 5 terminators in one month and WITH highlights on the black parts?!

Snippet (250 words): Fifth month of the challenge is already gone and five are the models I bring here today. This has been the worst month by far, since these models are incredibly cumbersome to paint. The amount of details and narrow spaces is truly baroque! And that is after accounting for the fact that I converted the arms with green stuff (first time modelling something!) to make them more dynamic. So, I can’t say I enjoyed painting these ones. The crisis level is only four because the only reason I am almost out of time for this entry is just that I spend several days worth of painting playing video games. So, the painting is more rough of what I wanted and the models still lack decals, but that’s a problem for future me.Paintwise there is little to note: the same random white and black contrast, the same red for weapons and decorations, etc. The only new thing is the face of the Chaos champion, the only model in the army to be bareheaded.Due to time constraints it is just the same white of the armour but with Vallejo Light Flesh mixed to it. Simple, but it works! As for bingo objectives: I used a new technique (Green stuff sculpting), added veteran marks (mostly the built-in trophy racks, but also some hands here and there) and playing a 2nd edition game with fully painted models only (the first one of the year, with my Necrons from the previous challenge).
You can’t actually photograph red miniatures…

Army entry: Squad Severian – Scout Squad, Sergeant and 4 Scouts, Chain Sword, Bolt Pistol, Bolters x 4                     106 points

Snippet (250 words): A Scout squad was on the agenda this month and these great models were fun, but also time consuming to paint.  Covered in enough pouches and straps to fit in on a mid 90s X-team, I love these scouts armed with almost comically oversized bolters.  The sculptors seemed to have used the exact same bolter that normal marines carry but which looks huge in the hands of these scouts who are comparably sized to the imperial guard models of the era.  I am excited to get this squad onto the table.  Being able to infiltrate after set-up can guarantee these bolters will be in rapid fire range from the start of the game.  Closing in on the end of this year’s challenge I am going to finish with a bang: next month’s pledge is a classic Blood Angels close assault terminator squad.  Thanks to Dr TV, Wachtmeister, and PygmyHippo and see you all next month for the wrap-up!
…but I guess these guys just don’t care about that fact!

Tactical Combat Squad, 5 Marines, Heavy Bolter, 165pts
Veteran marine, Bolter, Targeter, 38pts
The humble Tactical marine might just be my favorite unit/model in warhammer.  I love painting these guys, a unit of them just looks so right.  A simple and straightforward entry for Month 5 of the challenge but a contribution nonetheless to the reduction of the pile of unpainted. Only one month left and im excitied to pull everything together for a final photo (with a real camera, these phone pics just dont cut it).  I have a few other models lined up as a bonus and time set aside to get them done, so fingers crossed for an exciting finish (and a low crisis level). As a final thought, if you are reading this and not in the challenge, consider joining the next one its great motivation to get old models painted and pictures of them posted.
Hey! Wait! There’s only 6 of them! Lazy bastard!

Plague Marines (6) with a meltagun 316 pts.

“Well, when the sun goes down and the moon comes up I turn into a teenage Goo Goo Muck”
– Goo Goo Muck, The Cramps (1981)
Having now played my first ever game using Chaos Marines I’ve come to appreciate their excellent armor save, accurate shooting, and resilience in Toughness and Leadership. I decided to lean into their strengths by making the already tough Marines even tougher with the Mark of Nurgle. Toughness 5 marines are hard to beat. Since I’m a sucker for vintage monopose models, I picked up some plastic plague marines (plus a metal special weapon fig). That said, I’m not a huge fan of the Nurgle aesthetic in general, particularly the current crop of Nurgle models. The vintage models at least have some character to them. These plague marines are here because they seem to a reliable choice for a chaos force, and because I wanted a chance to paint some subdued color schemes. The models are not particularly full of detail, and were easy to paint. I gave each of them different boltguns in a mix of Chaos, Ork, and Imperial bolters, rather than their usual armament. I didn’t convert the models deliberately, but because the models were actually missing their right arms altogether, so I adapted. I also tried something I hadn’t tried before: painting heat-discolored metal for the meltagun’s muzzle. It ended up being fairly easy. I used brown, red, and blue acrylic inks to achieve the effect. Not sure why I waited so long to give it a try.
You can find more photos of my models at my blog, http://www.giantpygmy.com and on www.instagram.com/pygmyhippo.
And with Tom’s rendition of an Ork preschool we’re back to “how on Earth is this even possible to paint”

Snippet (250 words): And that’s it – this month sees the completion of all of the models I originally pledged to paint in this challenge! At the very start I was quite concerned about the number of models that I needed to get though, but in the end there haven’t been too many months where I have felt really up against things. This month was no real exception – despite submitting the slice on the last day, its not really been in too much doubt that it would get done. So this month has seen the rounding off of the army with some essential characters – Mek, Painboy and Runtherd. These will allow me to actually field a legal army with vehicles, dreadnought and to provide some ammo for the Mek’s rather nifty little weapon! I’ve also managed to paint said ammo – those poor little snotlings don’t know what’s awaiting them on their unshielded transit through the empyrean… I have tried a slightly new technique to get them painted in the form of the ‘Artis Opus’ version of drybrushing – which has turned out ok, but probably isn’t really suited to these old metal models as there really a bit too much surface texture on them for it to work really well. There is one bonus model in there this month, the extra Blood Axe boy and although I’m going to be on holiday for a chunk of July I am going to try and get at least one big bonus model finished – its been worked on intermittently for the last couple of months but just needs a push to get it across the line.
I don’t know what to say… I am as flustered AS that librarian is ready to smack some one with the flat side of his power sword.

Razorback, 1 model, auto launcher, 155 pts
Librarian, 1 model, none, 53 pts
Snippet (250 words):
For Slice 5, I completed a Space Marine Razorback and a Librarian model. I kept the Librarian as a basic Lexicanium with no additional wargear to avoid exceeding my points budget for this slice.
The Librarian was a straightforward and enjoyable project that took around seven hours to complete. I chose a different shade of blue for his armor than the rest of the army to help him stand out, much like my Techmarines and Chaplain. At some point, I’d also like to add some freehand work to the tabard to designate him as an Epistolary.
The Razorback is the first tank I’ve ever painted, and I have to say that the classic old-school edge highlighting really suits the Rhino chassis. It gives the model a crisp, clean, and highly readable appearance on the tabletop. I’m very happy with how it turned out, and I plan to paint the rest of my motor pool the same way.
Finishing these two models marks the end of my original five-month commitment, and I’m excited to paint a bonus model for the sixth and final month of the challenge.

Bonus both for me as I didn’t want to paint a tank haha

So this guys been sitting on my work bench in bits for 4 years so I thought I’d have a go and brining him back to life

Short story

Daemon Prince: Kragoth, the Iron Ascendant

Once Warsmith Kragoth Varn, master of siegecraft and breaker of fortress worlds, he sought perfection not through faith, but through relentless conquest. Every citadel reduced to rubble, every bastion drowned beneath artillery fire, drew the attention of the Dark Gods. Though he scorned devotion, Chaos rewarded his unyielding brutality.

Now reborn as Kragoth, the Iron Ascendant, he is a towering fusion of daemon flesh and corrupted war machine. His elongated warp-forged limbs strike like siege rams, crushing armour and flesh with equal contempt, while the battlefield itself twists beneath his presence. Where Kragoth walks, walls crumble, defenders despair, and the Iron Warriors march forward over the ruins.

“Weakness is not forgiven. It is buried beneath the rubble.”
