Cowabunga Journal is happy to present a brief Fall painting challenge focused on Warhammer Fantasy miniatures. The aim of the challenge is to complete blocks. Blocks of infantry.
This is the little sister challenge of #40k2ndAC. Unlike our 40k challenge, this challenge is only 3 months, running from September to and including November. Also, here we focus on finishing our regiment blocks.
Never heard of a Cowabunga painting challenge? Here is the rundown: If you sign up, each month of the challenge you have to paint some figures. Before deadline, you must send in a pictures of said painted figures, and some text describing your efforts.
After deadline, all the entries entered will be put up on display at http://www.cowabungajournal.com for everybody’s enjoyment. In a sense, we are building a “Tale of X” gamers experience. Except, that those who fail to meet the deadline are out.
Please be forewarned though: This challenge is a challenge. Not for the faint of heart. Painting 18-60 miniatures in 3 months can be very hard, and doesn’t tolerate a lot of procrastination. If you got the guts though, go for it!
Rules
Models: In this challenge we paint oldschool Warhammer Fantasy figures from the Oldhammer and Middlehammer ages… and anything modern adjacent. Or 3d printed adjacent. If you need more explanation than this, you’re overthinking it.
Pledges: You have to make a pledge of 3 blocks of stuff to paint. A minimum size block is defined as: 20 infantry (20 mm), 12 large infantry (25 mm), 6 monsters (40/50 mm), or 10 cavalry (25×50 mm). In all cases you are allowed to paint more.
Bonus models: You are free, well in fact encouraged, to paint models in addition to your pledge. These could be warmachines, characters and so on. Or even more regiments!
Deadline: Every month this is last day of the month GMT.
Knock-out: If you don’t submit before deadline, you are out.
Prizes: Other than the prize of getting your miniatures painted, the challenge will conclude with a vote for the best overall completed pledge. The winner gets a celebratory cowabunga mug.
Communication: While the challenge runs, there is a dedicated Discord channel on the Crown of Command: https://discord.gg/jx66FXj8E
We will also use the hashtag #FallBrawlAC on social media.

FAQ
I have rebased my figures to fit with some other game system. What do I do?
The basing convention from 4-6th edition Warhammer is followed. So a Dwarf will count as 20 mm irrespective of what base it is on.
I have very specific needs and questions, where do I post these?
Just add a comment here.
I feel the rules are too restrictive, and I only want to paint warmachines and characters!
OK! Then this is not for you.
Am I allowed to mix armies in my pledge?
Not the intention, but feel free – your models, your choice. Would be cool to understand why in your text entry.

Can a block be from 2 different units? In my case, I have these:
– 10 goblin archers and 10 goblin warriors (20 20mm minis, 1 block)
– 20 goblin warriors (20 20mm minis, 1 block)
– 5 goblin wolfriders and 12 goblin warriors (5 cavalry minis and 12 20mm minis, two half blocks)
Thanks!

It’s a bit daunting but I may give this a go. It was my intention to paint some High Elves this year. I’ll see if I can get them ready to go in time!
