40k2ndAC VII Month 3 Wave 2

Hääälloooo! It little belated but always happy, here we are with wave 2 of May! This round is actually the “Red Circus / Leopard Print”-theme round, but lately it seems like these concepts have taken over to the degree where a bonus round for it is a moot point. All hail the leopard!

I was so taken aback by James’ beast men that I had to make it the cover photo for this round. I really think the execution is brilliant. AND there’s red AND leopard print! Simplicity at its finest.

The amount of primary colours on these guys is simply devastating! Badum tisch! Awesome!

Devastator Combat Squad, 5 models, (Lascannon, Missile Launcher, Heavy Bolter x2, Power Fist), 280 Points

For slice three I painted up a combat squad of five devastator marines. This is not a valid squad in 2nd edition, as it has 2x too many heavy weapons, but I plan on filling it out to a full ten-man squad later with five additional bolt rifle wielding marines to make it legal.

I tried a new technique this time, or at least new for my retro models. I utilized oil paints for pin shading the recesses on the models. The thought was that this would be faster than pin shading with acrylic paints, but I’m not sure it was faster than the alternative after the cleanup pass and having to touch up areas that were too shallow for the oils to shade effectively (like the fingers of the space marine armor). It was fun to try something new, and it turned out great, but I’m not sure it is something that I will do again on future squads.

As with all my other submissions, these models were painted to match the studio models of the time, with a just few deviations this time to suit my tastes.

Eldar Dreadnought – 205 pointsShuriken Catapult, Flamer, Shoulder mounted lascannon

This was the first month that I really felt the heat… April has been crazy at work and painting time has really taken a hit (also… some 10mm Bretonnians may have distracted me a bit…). But, we made it to the finish line. This Eldar Drednought was one of my first large models that I had, and at some point, I decided it would be fun to repose it to hold a sniper rifle lascannon… at the time I didn’t understand pinning or the use of green stuff… here we are almost 30 years after I first got the mini, and I’ve decided to finally learn those skills. This model is the first time I’ve actually pinned and resculpted a joint… In the end, it was a mixed bag in terms of success… I hope I’ve hidden the dirt well with paint! Eventually, I’d like to create a special character dreadnought that contains a spirit stone from an Eldar Scout… time to think about special rules!

They said it could be done! Be nature finds a way – to add leopard print and red to Tyranids!

Hello there fellow hivelings! How are the biomorphs coming? Nice and protruded I imagine and with lots of spots? Excellent! Let’s see how the others are doing…

Well, this month was even more of a challenge than I had initially planned. Between school holidays, finishing a commission army of Space Wolves (check out my instagram at tains_miniature_painting if you’d like to see them!) and being away on holiday for a week, I did not have as much time as i would have liked to finish TWO broods of warriors. Especially since one of them was alternately layered in paint and glue.

Fortunately, between spare parts from an old friend and a few 3rd ed warrior heads I had handy, I was able to get things together. I even added some leopard print to the big head fellas XD I may actually run those with the Hardened Carapace or Toughened Exoskeleton biomorphs, but very glad to have this month done. Only three more models left on the “official” pledge, but I have grand designs for the next part of the project.

Stay tuned!

Despite the relatively low model count and simple paint schemes, this month was a little challenging. Partly this was because of a busy work schedule that made finding time to paint a little trickier, partly it was other painting projects in the run-up to Salute (a wargames show here in the UK). Still, I got it done in the end. I even finished a few days early and knocked together some scenery for the army. The main scenery piece represents Ambrose’s ruined shrine – the broken Imperial symbol on the ground (which you can’t really see in the photo; oh well) is a milliput cast of a 3d print given to me by a friend, and the rest is made of some old Hirst Arts blocks I had in the terrain box. I also made some objective markers, although I don’t think you need more than one most of the time in 2nd edition. One represents a Chaos monolith. Although Ambrose doesn’t think that he worships Chaos, I think this thing is out there, calling to him. Maybe he sees it in his dreams. Maybe it’s where his pilgrimage is eventually leading. We’re past the halfway point, and now we’ve got one month that’s going to be very busy with painting and one that’s going to be a little more reasonable. I’ve even got an idea of what bonus models I might paint in July if everything goes according to schedule.

Nothing says ‘Shhh! We’ re on a secret mission’ like red camo, dynamite, voracious pets and big guns!

The Kommandos are done. I stuck with the old 2nded scheme for these guys as the red and black was always super eye catching on them. This week was all in all pretty cruisy making the Kommandos a bit more relaxing to work on than most of the rest of my forces. The extra time gave me a chance to slice up some bonus models for printing. Although with the Kommandos, Goffs and Stormboys the army is looking too red and black. So expect to see some more Bad Moon boyz to be added as bonus models.

This month I focused on getting a squad of Striking Scorpions done. I have always been drawn to the different the aspect warriors for Eldar. My goal is to field an aspect warrior army, and now with the first three months of this challenge I have Warp Spiders, Howling Banshees, and Striking Scorpions painted. Howling Banshees and Striking Scorpions are both close combat squads, so now I get to compare how both work on the battlefield.

For next month, I hope to paint some bigger character and vehicle models. First on the painting desk will be an Eldar dreadnought.

I am happy I have this challenge pushing me forward and good luck to everyone on month 4.

Now kids, painting an entire army of Orks to this standard is the surefire way to get Karma, Hubris and all they friends looking to get back at you!

Blood Axe Mob, 1 Nob & 9 Boyz. Bolters, Autocannon, Melta Gun, Bolt Pistol, Chainsword, Eavy Armour – 159 Points.

There was a point with around a week to go that I wasn’t confident these would all get finished, but thankfully I managed to find enough time to get all 9 pledged models done and add an extra bonus one. As I was working on the first batch of 5 it occurred to me that as these are Blood Axes I should try and make them match a squad of Guard, given how they are influenced by the humies – so these have a Nob, autocannon as the heavy weapon and a melta gun for a special weapon. Unfortunately its since been pointed out to me that this isn’t a legal squad for 2nd – so I’m going to have to acquire another model so I can paint them up with a bolter. At least I’ll have some flexibility with loadout choice!

Nearly finished some Ork themed terrain, but not quite, so this will have to wait until next month (hopefully!).Now on to the remainder of the Boarboyz and some Blood Axe Kommandos. I’m off to a 2nd Ed event at the end of May so I need to get through as much as possible so I have a legal 1500 point army – I’m really looking forward to getting these Orks on the table!

Bonk bonk bonk! These Orks must have had LEGOs when they were young! Beautiful use of primary colours again!

I was hoping to get a lot more done this month but unfortunately life got in the way, as it tends to do. The plan was to finish three dreadnoughts and a standard bearer but in the end I’ve barely squeaked out two dreadnoughts, and that is without the banners and pilots – although I should have them done shortly.

Zarveth Siege-Witch walked the breach as iron screamed and walls folded like paper. In the Siegebreaker Wing, others brought guns—he brought inevitability. With a gesture, he unraveled mortar into dust and turned loyalist aim into betrayal. Warpfire traced equations only he understood, collapsing bastions at their strongest points. The Iron Warriors called it precision; Zarveth called it fate. By the time the guns fell silent, the fortress had not been destroyed—it had been rewritten.
