Fantasy Fall Block Brawl Month: Participants Front Rank

Tally ho and welcome to the Fantasy Fall Block Brawl Army Challenge 2023! We have quite a schedule in front of us as the participants who have entered this (of their own volition) will paint their way through piles of miniatures over the next three months!

What is this? Well – the FallBrawlAC is essentially a painting challenge. Each participant has taken it upon himself to paint a pledge selected by some criteria outlined in our “rules”. The first month of painting is September and at the beginning of October we shall release a compilation of the hard work these people have done. So it will carry on until the end of November when the challenge ends.

In total 17 mushroom crazed fantasy fanatics have joined up and listed below are the first 9 entries in the “Fronk Rank” (please put no other emphasis on this than the fact that it is first half of the people to submit an entry). Tomorrow we shall release the Rear Rank (=second half of entries).

warhammer dwarfs

I have been doing a Dwarf army on and off for years. It has been fighting in WFB 3rd edition, 4th edition, Age of Sigmar, Dragon Rampant, etc. and as of now it is battling its way through Warhammer Renaissance. So needles to say it is a project that has been growing and morphing steadily. I don’t really want to start more Fantasy army projects, although I have many smaller Warbands of different characters. As such it was a bit of a challenge to find three units of 20 Dwarfs which still needed painting, but I found Ulthars Dragon Company, a unit of Imperial Dwarfs and for my last unit something completely different, Golfags Mercenary Ogres. Golfags Ogres is a unit I always wanted since I was a kid and in the background they Allied with both Dwarfs and Orcs, which will make them OK for my Warhammer army and also useable in Orc warbands if needed.

lizardmen

I always wanted to build a Lizardmen army because it had a triceratops in it. If there’s a better reason to choose an army, I’ve never heard it. I’ve played far more 40k than I have WHFB, and this will be the first fantasy army that I planned completely in advance. I tried to start this Lizardmen around 10 years ago, and converted a bunch of saurus to hold spears that I made from brass rod, but the models just fell by the wayside when my daughter was born. I also hope to convert a large block of skinks from bows to javelins (brass rod for javelins and upholstery tacks for shields). The triceratops might have to wait for another day, since my goal is to churn out big blocks, only. These regiments will go towards getting the backbone of a new army in place. If I have time I might try to add a block of kroxigor, or some more models to my Undead or Dwarf armies, since I have some suitably old-school additions for both. So here is the start of “The Temple Army of H’Nkidhori, Goddess of Completed Tasks.”

Since I have several armies I need to work on (and since I find it easier to stay motivated when painting a variety of models), I thought this challenge would provide a good opportunity to finish a unit each for three different factions. I will also be working with three different generations of monopose models! The Swordmasters are 8th edition, the Orc Arrer Boyz are 6th edition and the Black Orcs are from 4th edition. I already have the colour schemes mostly worked out, so it’s really a matter of getting the paint onto the models. This will no doubt be a serious challenge, but I’m giving it a go!

monopose goblins

I’ve already painted up most of the High Elves from the 4th edition Starter Set, now it’s time to do the Goblins. I’ve got one set (32 archers and 32 spearmen) new on sprue, as well as an almost complete second set with a lot of extra spearmen (33 archers and 71 spearmen to be precise). It’s certainly going to be a challenging challenge, especially with other challenges going on as well, but I’m just going to give it my best shot. Any paint you see in the picture will be removed before the challenge starts.

Though a great fan of Warhammer 40,000, I’ve always found myself WHFB-adjacent – nobody near me wanted to play it – but during Covid I’ve come to enjoy solo gaming and so I decided it was finally time to build that middlehammer army of my dreams, and who else but the most red army of the red period? The majority of my sculpts are old hammer-style figures by Fabelzel, who has done excellent work in mimicking the original designs.

This is going to be a hard challenge, 60 models is more or less what I paint in 6 monhts, doing it at half the time is going to pusch me to the limit!

But I got a pretty large Goblin army so I thought I would mix some forest, Night and regular goblins to fill out the models that are already painted. The block of undead then?! Well, I got stuck in reading some vampire count army books and as I had some old minis in the collection I thought why not!

I will aim to get every mini in a block painted at basic TT and after that spend the rest of the time to raise the quality. Well like the right way for me to handle this challenge!

Back in about 2021 I bought some fantasy and newer sigmar sets to kitbash them together into a single Khornate army, I built most of the minis but never got to start painting. Other than what’s on the photos (and in the pledge) I have around 60 more infantry models (warriors mixed with CSM) plus some characters. I hope to be able to paint the whole army during this challenge, if not then I’m at least aiming for finishing with a surplus over the pledge.

orcs and goblins

This project was inadvertently started immediately after the last #40k2ndac army challenge when I started painting some random fantasy models I’ve wanted to tick off my list for a long time. Problem was, it wasn’t just from one army and I did not want to commit to just one force. Why you may ask? Well, my friend who introduced me to Warhammer in 1994 is returning to Australia soon and I want this to be motivation for finishing enough models to have a small game with. Let’s see how we go!Instagram handle: tains_miniature_painting

High elves

During the 40k2ndAC IV I painted up a roughly 2,000 point High Elf army for a local WAP tournament. I have relatively little left to do to finish the army completely and if I don’t get on them soon they will languish in a box somewhere half done for years. The 40k2ndAC was heaps of fun and great motivation so it seemed like a no brainer to jump on board for this one too. For this challenge I’ll be painting up 23 Phoenix Guard, 28 Archers, 8 White Lions, and a Swordmaster Musician.
